GMDSS Compliance for HF Radio Surveys after 1st January 2017

A Marine Safety Advisory has been issued via various flag authorities to ensure GMDSS capability and IMO compliance following changes to channelling arrangements effective 1st January 2017.

Vessel owners must ensure that high frequency (HF) radiocommunications equipment capable of narrow-band direct printing (NBDP) is type approved to comply with guidance issued in IMO Circular MSC.1/Circ.1460 Guidance on the Validity of Radiocommunications Equipment Installed and Used on Ships.

While most existing radio equipment should already be compliant with requirements, equipment that is not approved will need to be replaced, so that following the first radio survey after 1st January 2017 it meets channelling requirements reflected in sections II and III of part B in appendix 17 of the Radio Regulations.

Radio equipment without NBDP capability is not affected at this time, but vessel owners or managers may consider updating it in the future.
